Essay topic: Other than a love for animals, what lead you to choose veterinary technology as a career path?

2022 scholarship recipient"Ever since I was little, I had always had a love for animals. Big, small, fluffy, scaly, I loved them all. Even to this day, my love for animals grows. However, there is more to why I want to be a veterinarian technician than just because I love animals. I am choosing a career in veterinary technology because I can be an animal’s voice, help and educate owners, and to challenge myself.

Being an animal's voice is one of the reasons why I am choosing veterinary technology as a career path. As we all know, animals do not communicate the way people do. It is important to know how they communicate so we can help them. This is how we are their voices. Many people do not understand why animals act the way they act. We can help animals by communicating to their owners about their pets' body language and how their pet is talking to them. Additionally, if an animal is in an abusive household, we are their voices to report that situation and get them out of it.

Another reason why I am choosing veterinary technology as a career is I can help and educate owners. It is important to me that owners can come into clinics without the fear of being judged. People make mistakes and do not always realize that they are making bad decisions for their pets. I want to create an environment where they feel that they can be honest and not be judged. Additionally, I can show them tricks or teach them methods that will make their life and their pets' life easier and happier. I also want to be there when their pet is not doing great and help them as much as possible.

Lastly, I am choosing a career in veterinary technology because I want to challenge myself. Working in a veterinary clinic or hospital is not easy. Veterinary technicians face many challenges over time, and that is what makes them intelligent and wise. Challenges come with the opportunity of becoming a better version of yourself. When having a better version of yourself, you can better help animals, owners, and staff.

Overall, having a career in veterinary technology will allow me to do things I love every day. I will get to work with animals and help them by being their voice. I will also get to help people and educate them. I will be able to challenge myself every day and become a better technician and person each day. Veterinary technicians have the opportunity to make a positive change in pets' and owners' lives."
