Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Assists the supervisors with facility operations, vivarium equipment, and animal laboratory processes, oversight and support to the animal care program and the animal care technicians under the direction of the area supervisor. Assists the supervisor in the management of the animal care and husbandry program in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of Animal Welfare Act, the Public Health Service, and University policies to assure a quality animal care program that supports the research and teaching at Washington University.
  • The lead is responsible for ensuring that animal care duties are performed in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and that University and divisional policies are followed.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily observations and cage checks, animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include: perform daily water bottle/automatic water line and cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.
  • Provide direction to the husbandry staff on Operations and Facility issues. Specific responsibilities include investigating operational issues, including gathering information and details, compiling the information, and submitting/presenting it along with recommendation(s) for resolution of the situation/issue to the area supervisor. Provide training to new hires in the duties and responsibilities of animal care and facility operations.
  • Perform quality assurance responsibilities in assigned building and other buildings as necessary.
  • Conduct room inspections to assess the animals’ health and cage environment, as well as all related paperwork and record keeping.
  • Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines; perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures.

  • Obtain Purina certification within six months.

  • Provide and document care and husbandry for multiple animal species in accordance with departmental SOPS and regulations and guidelines of the Animal Welfare Act and the Public Health Service, to assure a quality animal care program that supports the research and teaching at Washington University. Provide care in specialized situations including biohazard, quarantine, and bioexclusion.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide and document daily husbandry care to multiple species, including rabbits, non-human primates, canines, and rodents. Care includes the provision of feed, water, clean cages, and enrichment.
  • Sanitize and maintain rodent colony rooms according to the schedule, to include sweeping and mopping animal quarters and procedure rooms, disinfecting all areas in room, rotating animal cages, cleaning large equipment, and stocking room supplies.

Registered Veterinary Technician Job Requirements:

Registered Veterinary Nurses ensure all Fido's and Kitties receive continuous medical attention, square meals, exercise, and potty breaks. They also depend on the nurse to provide prompt communication to the attending D.V.M. of ongoing activities.

Must be able to obtain the Chief complaint and detailed history for appointments.

Must have excellent ability to communicate with clients in person as well as on the phone or through email and text.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Take x-rays (general and dental);
  • place IV catheters, venipuncture (jugular, medial/lateral saphenous, cephalic, etc;
  • injections (SQ, IM and IV);
  • skin scrapes;
  • analyzing stool samples, ear cytology, skin scrapes, etc;
  • restraining dogs and cats of all sizes and temperaments;
  • monitor patients under anesthesia for routine and emergency care;
  • apply and remove bandages;
  • cleaning;
  • maintain and enter medical notes in electronic records;
  • and performing D.V.M ordered treatments on hospitalized patients (Fluids, injections, T.P.Rs, pilling, etc.)

We also work together with all staff to perform routine and deep cleaning of the hospital and kennels to ensure a healthy environments for our guest.

You will be on your feet for the majority of the day and must be able to communicate with others.

Must be able to work 2 - 3 weekends per month and be reliable.
